How to Calculate your Electricity Bills?

Background:

  All electrical equipment in house consume power and produces the required energy in terms of heat or light. In this modern world, electricity consumption needs to be reduce and utilised properly. 

In order to manage the consumption of power ,it is good to understand how much the electrical power is consumed by the electrical equipment and electrical bill need to be paid.

This blog post helps you to understand how to calculate the unit consumption by each electrical equipment at house. And the overall monthly billing is done which need to be paid to the utility company.

First let us understand how to calculate unit consumption of any electrical Equipment?

Formula:

 Below is the formula to calculate the unit of Power consumption

           Units/month=WattsXHrs  X 30

                                            1000

Units  = Units consumed

Watts = Watt rating of the used appliance

Hrs =  Duration of time the appliance's used in Hours per day

30 =  For a period of One month(30 days)

  

Further if we remove 30 in the formula, it will be the units for 1 day

               Units=WattsX Hrs

                                   1000

                                    

Units is also calculated with another formula as below

Units = KW*Hrs*30  

So in the above formula it is seen that Units are equivalent to Kw*Hrs*30 hence in this case when we consider Kw need not have to divide by 1000.  But as many appliances rating is in watt it is easier to calculate the units  hence the first formula is considered for calculation.

Below is one example of calculation,suppose the rating of applicance is 500W and we use it daily for 5 hours. So as per above formula 

           500   X  5    X  30  = 75 Units

              1000

        

This means that suppose a appliance of  watt rating of 500 w, is used for 5 hours for a day then 75 units ofelectricity is used per month.

Now  suppose, rating of equipment of of 2000KW, so convert 2 kw into watt will give you 2000w. Now similarly with using above formula

                 2000  X 2   X 30  = 120 Units
                     1000

This means if a electrical equipment of 2kw is used for only for 2 hrs for a day then a total of 120Units of electricity is used per month.

Now suppose now we will change the watt formula to KW formula as below

                  Units = KW  x  Hrs X  30
                                  2     x    2   

     So using above formula it will be 
                   
                         2000 x 2  X 30 = 120
                            2   x  2  

If we use kw formula in place of watt formula the resultant remains the same.Here we are not converting kw to w that is (KW/2) since it is 2 KW.

So the conclusion is that if you either KW formula or W formula also the result is same.

Let us now consider a sample calculation of one house

Brief Explanation of above table

 

Suppose  LED tube lights are used in house, a total of 5 number of tube lights are used. And 1 LED light is of 20W rating and they are used for 5 Hrs per day.

   So consumption of Unit for 1 tube light will be,20 watts multiplied by 5hrs, since the led light is used for 5 hrs daily divided by 1000 into 30 divided by watts.
This means 1 LED tubelight , if used for 1 month for 5hrs daily then 3 units of power is consumed or charged.

So 1 LED tubelight consumes 3 units then 5 tube light will consumes  
         3unitsX5tubelights= 15 units.


Total consumption of power is sum of units consumed by all equipments:
  

  5 TubeLight                               15

1 Washing Machine                  4.5

1 Water Heater                      120

1  Iron                                            9

3 Fans                                         72

1  Fridge                                     72

1 Laptop                                    19.5

                Total                         312    Units  (approx)  

This may vary depending on consumption of power, this is monitored and calculated units are given by meters installed.

Above is the explanation of how the electrical bills are calculated.


Above is the total units used by a customer for a period of one month. 

Now how much money will be charged for a month?
            The charges of the units will be different in different place depending on the tariff  In some place it may be Rs4 or Rs 5 or Rs6 or Rs 7. And also the tariff vary as per the units also.

If we consider a fix of Rs 6 per unit the total cost of the electrical bill will be Rs 1800.

In house Power Factor Penalty, will not be there, if you have company or business the electrical bill will be more. The above calculation is for houses.

With the above details it is clear that "save power to save your money". Hence try to use less watts electrical equipment in order get reduction in Electrical bills. 
As in Cricket it is told" Run saved is run scored", here also 
"Power save is money earned".
